I think you're right...romantic. Not macho or terribly sexy (but sometimes....whew....    ) but always romantic.

He is so sweet singing that lullaby in The Court Jester!

The man had a tenderness that reached right into your heart. The thing that distinguishes the great comedians from the good ones. Red Skelton's best moments were when you felt sorry for the hobo character. Dick Van Dyke's show was wild and silly. Yet it scored its greatest points with the quiet declaration of love and friendship. Danny Kaye was either a truly sensitive man or an unbelievably talented performer. My guess is, he was both!

I agree, Red!

Found this tongue-twister on a "youtube 78" with Danny Kaye entitled, what else, "Tongue-Twister":
Sheila is selling her shop at the seashore For shops at the seashore are so sure to lose. And she’s not so sure of what she should be selling - Should Sheila sell seashells or should she sell shoes?

I'm fascinated by the English adoration of Danny and what his appeal was for them -- could it have been that unique combination of silliness and sophistication? And the fact he played so deftly and wackily with the language?
I'm not smart enough to figure it all out.

SueSue, I'm going to hum Tickety-Boo the next time some angry old shopper at my local supermarket rams his or her cart into mine.

Jackie, I love every part of Danny as the dentist -- every scene is priceless, lol. "Get in the chair, Peter!" Did you know that his father-in-law, Sylvia's dad, was a dentist? I read that as a youngster Danny did some chores in the office, but used the drill to do woodworking, lol.

Danny is supposed to be doing a spot-on impression of Larry in MITTY; I need to see that again. The way he drops his jaw in disbelief when the WML panel says "Maurice Evans" is kind of touching to me -- here Danny is this huge star, an enormous talent, yet (contrary to some negative stories) he seems humble enough to be surprised.

By the way, Danny definitely had a sensual quality as well -- check him out lying next to Glynis in JESTER. The way he nuzzles her is pretty darn exciting!

Here it is:

I remember hearing Danny sing "Minnie the Moocher" when I was still living in the Bronx as a teenager. I think this is the record my parents had:
