THAT was Lawrence Tierney as a young buck ?!!
Don't you wonder what he was like on St. Patrick's Day? Or, given his reputation, were all days -- and nights -- the same?

Six months ago, they told me to stop or I was dead. I stopped. Now the spirits circle around my bed and they tell me to dance. I tell 'em, "Tough guys don't dance." They answer me, "Keep dancing." - Dougy Madden (Lawrence Tierney in Tough Guys Don't Dance)

And I have of late gained a new appreciation of Veree Teasdale (Mrs. Adolph Menjou). She was one sharp cookie. My new admiration began on my first viewing of Hal Roach's Turnabout, where Teasdale plays the sardonic, unflappable secretary in an office full of loonies. I guess it's 'cause now I can identify with such a character.
as one of the inmates, or one of the keepers???

Judith, I recall with pleasure when J. Pat O'Malley played Bert the companion of the fabulous Mrs. Naugatuck on "Maude" during the 1970s.

TCM is so great. Not only did they put on a George Brent festival, they even got in one of his movies with Verree Teasdale. She was awesome.

And jdb - that was a lovely and perfect description of J. Pat.

Biting a long, chewy strip out of Joan's right temple would be my guess.

Most definitely as the keeper of the loonies.

Teasdale was pretty nifty, huh? We'll have to start a "Spot Verree" squad to go along with the "Spot Mae Clarke" squad, all under the aegis of the "Shout WHIT BISSELL!!" battalion.

My best memory of Mr. Halton: playing the hapless, murphy-hounded repo agent in They Drive By Night . . just remembering him popping that scared sweat from being bookended by Raft & Bogart as they cheerily discuss the appeal of throwing the little man over the cab of their freight truck makes me chuckle fondly.
