Hi Joe,

Nice to see a picture of Michael Farmer. He was often my grandmother's escort whenever we hit London and sat next to me at a dinner at Luton Hoo in 1957. Luton Hoo was owned by Lady Zia Werhner, daughter of the Grand Duke Michael. It's now a luxury hotel.
Michael Farmer greatly resembled Gloria's Marquis.... There's a psychologgical story there somewhere???

Nice picture of Joan & Olivia together. It would be nice if they could reunite for tea somewhere before they die.

Roz & Loretta (Aunt Gretch) -- how these two supposedly intelligent women could have ended up marrying two of the greatest 'a**holes in Hollywood I'll never know.
Roz's Freddie Brisson was universally known as "The Lizard of Roz" and Gretch's Tom Lewis was just called "The A**Hole"...

Ya know, that pic of Walter Brennan & clan could almost be a capture or promo shot from his TV series "The Real McCoys"; I never fail to be pleasantly surprised by such evidence of just how delightfully down-to-earth this most Oscared man was in personal life!

You know, Larry, I just recently re-read Russell's memoirs, and I was struck by how glowingly she spoke of her husband, how much she loved him, and why (according to Russell he was brilliant, thoughtful, loving, stalwart, elegant, classy, protective, and lots more flattering adjectives). The first time I read the book, many years ago, I didn't really know anything about Brisson. This time, I read that passage with a more critical eye. I wonder how much of that encomium was hearfelt, and how much was defensive apology. But, when you think about it, one women's a-hole is another woman's Prince Charming. Brisson may have saved all his humane behavior for his wife. It's been known to happen.

Hi Judith,

I'm sure Freddie Brisson was Roz's prince charming. He devoted his life to her career advancement - Oscar promotions, "The Velvet Touch" and "Wonderful Town"...
And, I'm sure their son, Lance, would say kind things about him too.
Also, Cary Grant & Barbara Hutton thought highly of him too...

But, I have heard so many other different people downgrading him badly - Jack & Ann Warner and the Zukors and even Marion Davies (who loved everybody!).....

Personally, I never knew the man but I do know he left Mary Astor in tears once in 1962 or thereabouts.... And, I cannot forgive him for that...

Michael Farmer, Gloria didn't speak too kindly about him, it's nice to hear another opinion.

Klondike, it so happens that the TV series "The Real McCoys" was in production during the time that the Walter Brennan family picture was taken.

Hi,

Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine seem to be getting along quite well on "Rebecca"......
I always heard that he didn't like her one bit and wanted Vivien Leigh to play Mrs. De Winter #2...

I dunno, Larry. Olivier looks pretty unimpressed by Joan Fontaine in that picture to me. I can just hear him thinking, "If only it were Viv..."

Gee, Mongo, I had a cat who used to watch me make tuna fish salad with that same look of thinly veiled disinterest as seen on the face of Constance Bennett gazing longingly at Gable. Ria & Gilbert might want to compare notes later in life.

Hey, Mongo!
That USO pic of Martha Raye served to remind that although this treasured comedienne had, shall we say, an amusingly strong and unique face, she also had, at least in her prime, some of the sexiest hair in Hollywood. 8)
(Now pardon me as I g.i. crawl my way to the nearest foxhole and prepare for the barrage of dispute about that opinion . . . . :? )

Hi,

Klondike-
I won't dispute your opinion on Martha. Although she was known for her "big mouth", I can tell you she was much more interesting to me for her large comfortable busoms (I've snuggled up to them on a couple of occasions) - - she was my 'godmother'.....

Moira-
Nice picture of Ria Langham. This picture must be between 1937 & 1939, as those two couples wouldn't necessarily have existed before or after. Connie & Gil before and Ria & Gable after.
Ria Langham was a very good friend of my grandmother.

Joe-
Thank you so much for the delightful picture of Mae Murray. Cecil B. De Mille and she were very fond of one another and had worked together at one time.
He wanted her for 'Mary Magdelene' in "King of Kings" but she had become blacklisted by then, I think.

Interestingly, these ladies and Nell all died within weeks of each other - Mae, then Nell, then Ria!!!

If I am not mistaken, that is Jesse Lasky on the right. I expect this was at some kind of dedication for the DeMille Barn (now Hollywood Heritage).

Mae looks great, I must say!

I'm confused wasn't Gilbert Roland Norma Talmadge's beau both whilst she was married to Joe Schenk and after their divorce.
