That's the work of Jacques Kapralik, who did collage/illustration work for Paramount and 20th Century Fox in the 1930's before moving over to MGM in the 1940's and 1950's. A fine artist whose appreciation seems to be seeing a resurgence over the past few years.

Quite possibly. He did a lot of opening title designs, including "Presenting Lily Mars", "Her Cardboard Lover"and many others. He also did illustrations of a film you're probably very familiar with: Salome with Rita Hayworth.
