Oh, Maximus! Sigh. That scene gets me every time.

I didn't know what time it was. I didn't have a watch. They don't make that kind of time in watches, anyway.

I agree! I could have picked almost any line from the film and it would have been a "best' line.

chandler really opened my eyes to what you could do with words and somehow this is the movie version of his work that captures his way with dialogue best.

I absolutely agree. The man twisted a phrase into something almost musical. MURDER, MY SWEET is my favorite as well. I'll always wonder how much he contributed to DOUBLE INDEMNITY, the best spoken movie I've ever seen. What was Chandler? What was Wilder? Even James M. Cain. We'll probably never know!
