Mongo, thanks for that nice big photo of Jerome Cowan. From a wolfish detective stupid enough to get his brains blown out, to a foolish older suitor, to a witty New York intellectual, to a nightclub hopping private eye, he always added a little extra something to his roles. Sometimes it was something dark and sinister, and other times it was something funny. And I love how dapper he was. Happy Birthday, Jerry!

It's really hard for me to believe that Glynis Johns is 89, god bless her.

And Wendy, let us not forget Jerome's brief but classic bit as he explains what "crashing out" means to a tearful Ida Lupino at the close of HIGH SIERRA.

I agree with you about his versatility. Never a star but an always enjoyable supporting player.

Stone, regarding Rolf and Cagney:

Image
Looks like Rolf sketched the picture in Hawaii (I believe there could be a date
in the right hand corner )

Wendy, I too appreciate Jerome Cowan. I recall him as a rascal in "Miracle in the Rain"
(he actually got to kiss Peggy Castle on the lips)

And what about his most "famous" role, of the hapless district attorney in MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET? That was my first memory of the lovely man and I've loved him ever since.

I like George Raft just fine, but I've never had the, uh, movie hots (so to speak) for him.

To be serious about Cary Grant -- he is in a sphere all his own, sui generis, unique, and like Audrey Hepburn, I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with him. ;)

But to be serious once more re Jack Oakie, I love him. He was a great big huge adorable ham but in addition to his hamminess, he had a sweet and vulnerable quality I find very appealing. And he could sing and dance. And his performance in The Great Dictator is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. It's not everyone who can upstage Charlie Chaplin. :) P.S. I've never actually read his bio so for all I know he was the terror of Hollywood. I'm just talking about what he conveys on screen.

Could anything surpass that patented Burt Lancaster grin -- with the exception of Frank Gorshin's superlative impersonation of the star.

RON RANDELL (1918 - 2005)
Ron Randell made a couple of great guest appearances in the first and fourth seasons of Bewitched. In the first he plays a mortal, old buddy of Darrin who falls in love with a Samantha/Endora combination ("Which Witch Is Which"). In the fourth he plays lady-killer warlock Rollo who is an old beau of Samantha. His love potion finds its way into Endora's drink with uproarious consequences ("Once in a Vial"). :D :D :D
