Irene Dunne in The Awful Truth (The final half hour might be the single greatest comedic performance I've ever seen)

Katharine Hepburn - Bringing Up Baby, Sylvia Scarlett, Holiday etc etc etc...

Mae Clarke in Waterloo Bridge

Cary Grant in His Girl Friday, Holiday, Bringing Up Baby etc etc etc...

Ginger Rogers in Stage Door

James Mason in Bigger Than Life

Myrna Loy in Love Me Tonight (she steals every scene she's in, and it's what made her a star)

Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men

Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity, The Lady Eve

James Murray in The Crowd

Charlie Chaplin in The Kid

Woody Allen in Broadway Danny Rose

Lew Ayres in Holiday

Liza Minnelli in Cabaret

Judy Garland in A Star is Born

Thanks for all your posts. What I was looking for was a performer, who combined an all round peformance in one film. For example it's not his best film by any means, but I picked out The Vernon And Irene Castle Story as the film where Fred Astaire combines his acting and musical talent
