Re: *CANDIDS*

Re: *CANDIDS*
Thank you for the picture of Antonio Banderas, Moira. He's one of the few modern actors who sets my heart a flutter

Re: *CANDIDS*
A little tribute to the Songbird of the South, Kate Smith. Her portly appearance notwithstanding, she had a truly excellent voice - rich, deep, and with an astonishing range. She had very popular variety shows on both radio and television. And she was the reason that Katherine Hepburn, not wanting to be known as "Kate Smith," purportedly insisted her husband Ludlow Ogden Smith change his name to Ogden Ludlow.
The real Kate Smith's rendition of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" is still with us -- it's hard to attend a sporting event anywhere in this country without hearing it played at least once. More Americans today know the lyrics to this song than know the lyrics to "The Star Spangled Banner" because of Kate Smith's great performance, and there have been campaigns from time to time to make "God Bless America" our official national anthem.
PS -- At first glance, I thought that classy photo of Louis Nye was Frederic March. (Hi ho, Steverino!)

Re: *CANDIDS*
I love that picture of Jack LaRue, but can understand, after watching The Story of Temple Drake on youtube, why George Raft turned down the role that LaRue played in that movie with the words, "that's career suicide"! Poor Jack was stuck in those dark parts for the rest of his career, even reprising it in No Orchids for Miss Blandish 15 years later! He was really very attractive, but he didn't have much of a career, sadly.
Beulah Bondi looks like quite a dish there too!
Thanks for posting those images, JF.

I've always had a crush on Mr. O, and that picture shot my blood pressure way WAY up. And he looks a tad like Robert Wagner there, doesn't he?

Thankfully, RO has too much dignity to do those reverse mortgage commercials.

I think RO is cuter.
My favorite was the one of Walter Slezak - I NEVER imagined him young.

You're not kidding, Knitty. The playful/naughty/ironic/come-hither expression on his face is making me weak in the knees. Who wouldn't want to be looked at that way?knitwit45 wrote:I've always had a crush on Mr. O, and that picture shot my blood pressure way WAY up. If he would adopt such poses on TCM, viewship would probably increase quite a bit, at least among us gray ladies.
