Andy Griffith Flashbacks

Post by moira finnie »

I did occasionally find myself drifting over to TVland very late at night to catch the Andy Griffith show--but then I woke up one morning looking like a cross between Otis the Drunk and Aunt Bee, and I weaned myself away from that tendency pronto. Now I just look a bit like Ernest T. Bass on rough mornings. Guess that's better than waking up to look like Barney.

You should love the Burns and Allen shows. They were very good.

Two other shows I'll add from my younger days are "The Odd Couple" and "The Rockford Files."

So interesting how our tastes vary and agree. Really, I've watched so much television in my day, it could take me months to compile a truly accurate list of my favorites, but here's a first pass:

I Love Lucy
Rocky and Bullwinkle
St. Elsewhere
Dr. Kildare
MASH
Green Acres (hooray for reruns!)
Naked City
The Defenders
Your Show of Shows (Sid Caesar/Imogene Coca variety show)
Martin & Lewis (it was called something else - the name of the sponsor)
The Simpsons
Your Hit Parade
Mary Tyler Moore
Bob Newhart
Laugh-In
The Rockford Files
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Secret Agent/The Prisoner
Various Britcoms, especially "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin"
The first three Star Treks
Rocky Jones, Space Ranger

I believe that the name of the Martin & Lewis TV Show was The Colgate Comedy Hour.

You're my kind of people. All of my friends loved Friends and Seinfeld. I always took great pride in the fact that I never did, although this kept me out of the "current" loop whenever people would discuss them. Ah well. I don't watch a lot of current tv, but I've always been a big comedy person.

All Time Favorites:
Newsradio
Arrested Development
Andy Richter Controls the Universe

From this century:
How it's Made (hooray for Canadian shows!)
The Soup
Family Guy
Andy Barker P.I. (but hey, like every else I enjoy, it's already been cancelled.)
Strangers With Candy
Michael Palin's various travel shows
Everybody Loves Raymond

From Last Century:
Monty Python's Flying Circus
The Monkees
The Rockford Files
Green Acres
The Prisoner
The Avengers
The Odd Couple
Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Favorite all-time classic era TV Drama:
JOHNNY STACCATO (1959-60) Awesome John Cassavetes private eye drama; Johnny, a one-time Greenwich Village jazz musician now works as a private eye, headquartering himself at Waldo's, a hip jazz club run by Eduardo Ciannelli (as Waldo). On any given episode the "house band" might include Johnny Williams (yes, that John Williams), Red Mitchell, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel and Shelly Manne. In addition to starring, Cassavetes also directed a handful of the 27 total episodes. Guest stars included Gena Rowlands, Charles McGraw, Cloris Leachman, Anthony Zerbe, Elisha Cook Jr, Paul Stewart, Elizabeth Montgomery, Mary Tyler Moore & many others! The services of such cinematographers as Lionel Lindon ("Manchurian Candidate") and Ben Kline ("Detour") were used to excellent advantage. One of my favorite episodes was titled "The Wild Reed" guest-starring Harry Guardino as a heroin-addicted jazz musician buddy of Johnny's. TV Noir at its absolute best! Lots of VHS tapes and now DVDs are floating around on eBay with varying quality, depending on the original source material. MCA, the rights holder, has yet to issue an official set. (I've paraphrased my own IMDb review of this series.)

Jeez, I had forgotten Andy Richter. That was such a great show that was on for about 10 minutes. I loved it.

Are you a fan of "The Kids in the Hall?" I should have put that on my list.

"I'm crushing your head! I'm crushing your head! You're a flathead!"

I forgot to put that on mine too! We get the CBC on our cable system, so I used to watch KITH when it was on every week. The Canadian shows differed from the HBO eps. I was like 11 or 12 when I first saw it and I'm amazed at how many jokes I never got, because I was too young to fully understand them.

I really wish they would put Andy Richter Controls the Universe on dvd. There are lines from episodes I constantly quote till today--"Cover your genitals, it's a duct tape wedding!" (from the Conan episode) is one of my all time favorites. It was a great show. Everything I like is always cancelled, so I just stopped watching tv.

OLDIE, BUT SHORTIE

Post by Sue Sue Applegate »

Does anyone ever remember the show Grindle with Imogene Coca?
For some reason, I watched it religiously for the 5 minutes it was on.

After I saw her in a clip or repeat of Your Show of Shows with Sid Caesar, I tried to find something to watch with her in it.
