Comparing Awards Associations

Post by skimpole »

Here's an interesting idea for a thread. Or at least it interests me and I'm going to run it into the ground. The Academy Awards is often an exercise in rewarding popularity over talent, in conventional wisdom overriding aesthetic judgement, and a host of other vices. So why not compare it to other awards granting institutions?

Let's start with the National Board of Review. And let's look at 1929-1960 first (Before 1932 the winners were given in alphabetical order, with the actual winner appearing first in 1932.)

NBR choices clearly better than the Academy: I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (32) Mr. Deeds goes to Town (36) The Grapes of Wrath
(40) Citizen Kane (41) Monsieur Verdoux (47) The Bicycle Thief (49) The Quiet Man (52)

NBR choices I've never seen: Topaze (33) The True Glory (45)

NBR choices that are clearly worse than the Academy: Confessions of a Nazi Spy (39) The Ox-Bow Incident (43) Sons and Lovers (60)

NBR runner-ups I've never seen: Bulldog Drummond, Paris Bound, The Valiant (29), Holiday, Laughter, The Man from Blankley's, Outward Bound, Street of Chance, Tol'able David (30), Dishonored, The Guardsman, Quick Millions, Rango, Surrender (31)

It appears Skimpole is only comparing the best picture award. Does the National Board of Review provide nominations for best-picture?

I ask became if they did, it would be interesting to compare what films were nominated, as well as which film won.

I think TCM has shown Bulldog Drummond, and I know it has shown The Guardsman (Molnar comedy with Lunt & Fontanne) and Outward Bound, which is good although the remake, Between Two Worlds, is even better. I would be interested in seeing the 1930 version of Holiday starring Ann Harding to see how it compares with the 1938 Hepburn/Grant/Cukor remake.

Now let's look at the Golden Globes, which for most of its existence, has divided the awards into two: Drama and Musical/Comedy. Twice as many chances to get it right, or more to get it wrong? Let's find out. Here's part one: 1944-1970

GG choices clearly better than the Academy: Sunset Blvd. (50),

GG choices clearly worse than the Academy: The Song of Bernadette (43), The Robe (53), Anne of the Thousand Days (69), Love Story (70)

From 1956 to 1968 every Oscar Best Picture winner won one of the Golden Globe awards.

skimpole, Heaven Knows, Mister Allison with Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr is an exciting film and has such beautiful cinematography. Since you’ve never seen it, I recommend you give it a chance. Huston directed the film, wrote the screenplay along with John Lee Mahin, and Oswald Morris was the cinematographer.
Plus some hilarious backstories.
