BEST

Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

WORST

John Huston in Chinatown (1974)

Too many choices to make, but you could get a "best" and "worst" from the same movie.

James Mason in Bigger Than Life

Best: Fredric March in 'The Best Years of Our Lives' (...and presenting a good father, foibles and all, and without the role being idealized in any way)

Worst: James Coburn in 'Affliction' (...as mean and ornery as you'll ever see a father being depicted)

(...and both coincidentally being Academy Award winners for their performances)

Worst: Claude Rains and Charles Coburn, both in Kings Row

Best: Brian Aherne, "My Son, My Son"
