Re: Soon to be playing- Our own MoiraFinnie
My calendar has been freed for this exciting evening.
Moira, I've always been curious about something, and now I have you to ask: I've always wondered how the films are chosen in instances like this. Were you given any limitations? Did you choose from a menu, or was it carte blanche? It seems there could be potential for a labyrinth licensing issues for TCM, depending on the film you requested. Did you give them a top five list, and TCM tried to accomodate; or did you just request this interesting Jean Gabin work? If you had chosen a 20th Century Fox film, would they have strived to attain the rights for a screening? It was my understanding that when rights to show a movie are bought, it's usually for a number of screenings. So maybe we can look forward to a few viewings of this film over the following months?
Congratulations!

Thanks, Moraldo. I chose several films, as did the other Morlocks, but this one was number one for me. There were no limitations on which movies we could choose, but perhaps others (like Mongo, Lynn & Theresa) could offer a different perspective. I do know that making sure that Touchez Pas Au Grisbi was available for broadcast was touch and go for awhile, but things seemed to work out for the best.
I'll be posting more about this occasion as we draw nearer. One of the things that I never expected when I went out on a limb and said I would do this was the enthusiasm of others for my experience as a guest programmer. It is very touching and kind of all of you. Thank you again.

Late to this thread, but congratulations nonetheless. I am also enthused that you chose a great film that has not been circulated to death and can't wait to hear your comments. My only questions are:
1) Did you get to use a TCM coffee mug on the set while filming?
2) Was there coffee in it?
3) Did you keep the cup?!

Thanks, Joel!
They did let me drink water from a TCM cup (psst, don't tell anyone, but they even gave me a new one to take home!!). The kind people who run the show behind the scenes offered me coffee and a bite beforehand, but I was way too keyed up to enjoy anything. I'm glad you like this film choice. I thought it was a good movie to introduce people to an older Gabin, to see the way that the French re-imagined film noir in their own way, and it is a beautiful performance by Jean Gabin.

What a lovely picture Moira, one to be framed.
