Many thanks for the quick and most complete detail. Suppose I should have expected it to involve a sad situation; even then the bottom line ruled. Imagine if that had happened to Hitch or Ford or Altman - how much we would have lost.ChiO wrote:Laughton and Paul Gregory had formed a production team for the stage. Gregory got a copy of a soon-to-be published book, The Night of the Hunter (David Grubb), and showed it to Laughton, who liked it. Laughton had wanted to direct a film, so he Jackson got a distribution deal with United Artists.
The previews were so-so, causing United Artists to promote another Mitchum movie, NOT AS A STRANGER, more heavily. The reviews ranged from "too arty" to "not sinister enough" to criticism of Mitchum's performance. Laughton was distraught over the box office failure, abandoned the project he was working on (an adaptation of Mailer's The Naked and the Dead), and never directed a film again.
I guess Laughton was just ahead of his time. Still, I wonder if his film would be better accepted today?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
CAROL OHMART is 87 today
SUSAN PETERS (1921 - 1952)
LOUISE ALLBRITTON (1920 - 1979)
While filming "Son of Dracula" , she and her costar Robert Paige were constantly playing jokes on their cast mates. One day, costar Pat Moriarty and Robert Paige were filming a scene where they flip open her Allbritton's character's coffin. They were astonished upon opening the lid to find Allbritton inside, completely naked.
GEORGE SANDERS (1906 - 1972) suicide

“The newest fur in captivity is white mutton. Fashion’s favorite for spring, this fur is set off to perfect advantage by the blonde smartness of Joan Bennett. Joan chooses navy blue for her frock and hat and introduces a red note for contrast in the printed bodice of the dress and the posy on her pert turban. The coat is cut in swagger lines and is the inspiration of Jaeckel of New York.”
