Hi Joe,

1) J. Edgar Hoover -
He's looking yearningly at poor Cornell and wanting to strip those tights off him and possible wear them at home!!!

2) Ilka Chase -
A thoroughly classy lady.
I once saw her at a NYC restaurant, seated next to me. She had brought her grandchildren to lunch.
She was wearing a gray and coral coloured chiffon dress and looked very chic. Her grandson caused the waiter to spill maranara sauce on her and all the while he was apologizing and wiping her off, she simply said, "Don't worry dear, it actually matches the outfit".. And, smiled!!
I voiced, "That's very gracious of you to be so kind". And, she replied, "Well, it wasn't his fault and I don't want him to lose his job over it!"...
And then, "This stuff is so hot, I wish they'd spill some ice water on me!!"....
Classy lady.....

3) Theda Bara -
Still half dressed!! Did she ever make a movie with clothes on???
I wonder if they took so long making that film that her leading man simply starved to death or did she eat him? After all, she was a VAMP!!!

4) Steve Brodie -
Could that lady with him be Laura Hope Crews? It looks like her but I don't know the year of the photo. She died a little after "Gone with the Wind"...

5) Jane Russell -
She still looks good for 87 but she could tone down the makeup. Those eyebrows a way too black.
And, she could minimize the earrings too...

6) Ralph Richardson, Laurence Olivier and Alec Guinness -
I never cared much for Laurence Olivier but I do consider Ralph Richardson and Alec Guinness as the best British actors ever.

Vecchiolarry wrote:Hi Alison,

You are correct.
That is not Natasha Rambova and it is not Pola Negri; it is Frances Marion, a scriptwriter, who wrote for Valentino and was requitedly in love with him. She was middle-aged then and the photo shows her as past her prime...
Neither Natasha nor Pola ever looked than chunky or frumpy!!!
That picture is mislabelled; Classicstardust.com is notorious for getting people mixed up. They have photos called Hedy Lamarr, which are Joan Bennett and also Ann Miller labelled Maureen O'Sullivan.

Larry

Thanks for clearing that up!!! :D

Larry, first of all thanks for clearing up the confusion over the Valentino image. I'll be sure to be more cautious with that site.

I've always liked Ilka Chase. She had a naturally kind and upbeat manner about her...so genuine too.
Your guess is as good as mine regarding the Theda Bara image. I say she ate him.
Laura Hope Crews was long dead when that picture of Steve Brodie was taken in the 1980s.
I too am not crazy about Laurence Olivier. As a matter fact he is one actor seldom mentioned on the boards.

Is Ruth Gordon standing on a box in that photo, or is her husband standing in a ditch?

Judith, since Ruth Gordon was only 5' 1" and Ronald Colman was 5' 10" I suspect that she is standing on a box.

Thanks for clearing it up Vechiolarry. I just knew you'd know who it was

Frances Marion had a good taste in men

Hi Joe,

Tallulah's friend is Rita Lydig, the fashion model sister of Mercedes D' Acosta, who is in the background right....
The little dark skinned man next to Mercedes is her husband - and I can't remember his name, but he was Italian.
The taller man in the background middle is Rita's husband, Mr. Lydig - and I can't remember his first name.....

This picture must have been taken in the 20's or early 30's as they all look so young.

Larry, thanks for your interesting info regarding the people gathered in the Tallulah Bankhead image.
All I know is that Rita Lydig was a beautiful woman.

The one above shows Valentino presenting Barrymore with the Rudolph Valentino Medal for acting achievement (Beau Brummel) in 1925 at the Ambassador Hotel. It was only awarded this one time. Valentino did not live to present another.

I've got a LOT of catching up to do in this thread. GREAT photos, BTW.

This is actually Louella Parsons, with Valentino at Marion Davies' Ocean House in Santa Monica. Summer, 1925.

Hi Rudyfan,

OK, I can see where that is Louella Parsons. I stand corrected.
Frances Marion did resemble Louella quite a bit, but I do believe she was not as fat as Lollie.

Thanks for straightening all this out...

I am indeed.

And thank you for posting that photo. I wish he'd have lived to have a career in talkies and maybe as a producer/director.
