Can I come back to Brazil for a moment? I love those sounds, and I have lots on my iPod. One of my very favorites is Brazilian-American Luciana Souza, who teaches at the Manhattan School of Music. A pure, clear and very fluid voice. Her version of Desafinado is my very favorite, but I couldn't find it on YouTube. Here's another good one (with guitarist Romero Lubambo):

Ah, c'est le quatorze juillet, le jour de La Fête Nationale de France! (A/k/a Bastille Day)

The French may have botched up their revolution, but they did get a really great anthem out of it, especially in this no holds barred arrangement by French composer Hector Berlioz.

Roberto Alagna (French, his Italian name notwithstanding) - La Marseillaise

The French seem to have a way with all things American, as
demonstrated by the great MICHEL LEGRAND, featured here
in his role as arranger and pianist in this trio of Yankee jazz
standards…Vive le Record Party!

Front & Center, Yves Montand fans!
If you've never seen this musical number before, you're in for a spectacular treat!
Advance to 2:33 on the embed below to watch a romantically persistent Yves use the ESP of Love to pursue a radiantly confused Babs Streisand all over Manhattan, in one of the coolest Broadway power ballads ever!

Some Friday morning offerings:

First up is a kickin', hard-edge folk-rock cult band I've just discovered - like a collision between Matchbox 20 & the Heartbreakers

Next up: the theme from the best show still running new on TV

Rounding out the middle is a very special tune; one of my all-time faves, a show-stopper @ the Superbowl XXXVII halftime show, and my grandson Spud's official birthday song

And to finish up, a silver age rock classic that will always thrill

And finally, for the person that woke me up at 2:27 am wanting to talk criticism about a film she'd just seen:

Thanks to MichiganJ over at the “Who Died Now” thread for
his heads up about the passing of Gordon Waller of PETER AND
GORDON
fame. Strictly out of the Fab Four mold (in the best
imaginable way) … (Sorry, don't know if he's the bloke on the right
or the left)

Al Capone guns don't argue.

I'm partial to the king's version
Prince Buster - Al Capone.

Prince Buster - Madness.

Symarip - Skinhead Moonstomp. The 1969 skinheads were not like the lunatic skinheads of today.

Ken Boothe - Everything I Own.

Gogol Bordello - Start Wearing Purple. Great Klezmer Reggae.

Best wishes

Well, tomorrow it commences.
THE GATHERING.
The central showpiece to Scotland's year-long Homecoming celebration, the nation's most ambitious tourism project, ultimately designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth year, with upward of 50 different gala events scattered throughout 2009, all across fair Caledonia.
Tomorrow morning, over 8,000 kilted Gaels from all over the globe will congregate at the foot of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, and on cue, march behind their Clan Chiefs, to the sounds of the world's finest massed pipe bands, in grand procession up the Royal Mile, to the forecourt of Holyrood Palace, there to be greeted by Prince Charles, Princess Anne, SNP leader Alex Salmond, Gathering director Lord James Sempill, and other dignitaries, and settle in to attend the ceremonies & celebration of a lifetime.
My clan chiefs, Martin MacIntyre of San Francisco, USA, and His Grace, Alexander Scott of Bowhill, the Duke of Buccleuch, will be there with broad contingents of kin . . but without me.
Instead, I'll be here, and on the job, and with my family, in Vermont . .
And that is beyond doubt a good thing . .
. . . though it leaves me still wistful, just a small tad . .
Here's a tiny sampling of the immense venue of entertainment that will be enjoyed this weekend in Edinburgh . . .
