Vaughn Monroe

Post by mrsl »

This month and last month The Western Channel has run several Vaughn Monroe movies. I have thought of him mainly as only a singer, that's him singing at the beginning and end of Die Hard I & II in case you didn't know. But because of my dilemma of repeats on TCM, I'm watching a lot of the old B&W westerns. The funny thing is, I really enjoy them. I even find myself waiting for The Gene Autry movies. In any case, Mr. Monroe's movies seem to have a little bit larger budget since the films are quite clear and sharp, and very often in color. He, himself puts forward a pretty good image of a cowboy. He's a big man, barrel chested, fairly good looking, and that deep, deep voice is also his speaking voice - not just for singing. You might want to check out one or two of his movies if you have the channel.

Hi Anne,

I think I may have seen one of Monroe's movies this weekend---I'm not sure,
because I came in late. I too, have only thought of him as a singer.

Someone else I've never watched is "Lash LaRue", which is being featured
sometime this month. I have no idea if I'll like that series or not. I can't
say I care for the all-black duds he sports, ha!

I'm becoming a fan of Gene Autry's shows and movies. He's just very
easeful and relaxing to watch if nothing else more captivating isn't scheduled.
I like how he takes me down after a hectic day in New York City. He wasn't
"Mr Excitement" but there is something appealing about that laid back demeanor,
and genuine lack of pretense. He also seemed like just a darned nice fellow.

In channel surfing over the weekend, I thought I saw something western that had singer Tony Martin in it, rather than Vaughn Monroe. Martin looked sort of urban and out of place in buckskins, so I didn't linger. Did you see it?

I do remember Monroe on an episode of Bonanza, long ago (Adam was teaching Monroe how to sing: "Not so nasal!"). I've always enjoyed Bonanza's comic episodes more than their serious ones.

I think he did work with Ms. Raines. I looked him up on imdB but they don't have a filmography for him, only info on him as a big band leader and singer.
