How about Myrna Loy in her precode days as an exotic character? She was great in The Squall but completely unlike the far more consistent character she became after The Thin Man. She was a great exotic: also see Thirteen Women and The Mask of Fu Manchu and... There's another thread I posted to here ...

I'm a big fan of Myrna Loy but the fact that her arms and body never move always annoy me. And of course the day I finally say that aloud, even in a virtual sense, I see The Squall, where Myrna acts with every part of her body. I've heard that she despised her exotic period in the early sound era, ...

Chaplin depends for me on which films and which stage in his career. I dislike him in many of his shorts, especially in 1914, but the later shorts and features are a different story. I still have trouble with Fatty Arbuckle though, in anything. That's all probably sheer distance in time and culture ...

You need to be more than a good dancer to complete in Fred and Ginger's league. Hallelujah to that! Not being a fan of musicals at all (and still trying vainly to understand why I love some but hate most), I'm still a major Fred and Ginger fan. I end up knocking points off my ratings because their ...

Boy did I flout the consensus on this one! I guess I should preface this post by emphasising that I'm not planning to upset anyone in the slightest... I was really impressed by Camille, especially because on the face of it it isn't the sort of film I would usually either particularly enjoy or be imp...

I hadn't heard that but it makes a huge amount of sense. Do you remember who said it?

i didn't realise Victoria had an audience in the States. that being the case perhaps many would like to see her tv movie Housewife 49 I live in Phoenix, AZ but am English, was born and raised in Essex and spent twenty odd years in Yorkshire. The Victoria Wood audiences I remember are all in rural Y...

The Magic Christian is now firmly on my must-see list. I hadn't even heard of it... I remember Heavens Above as being hilarious, and even more interesting to me because one of our local priests was the spitting image of Sellers. Beyond Dr Strangelove, my favourite Sellers is probably The Mouse That ...

I remember Victoria Wood having a very female audience. On more than one occasion I visited friends to find all the female members of the household curled up in stitches watching Victoria Wood. This could be three generations of women, from kids to grandparents. And we young men couldn't work out wh...

Your posts are going to be fascinating ones to me, Stuart. I remember these names well, even if I wasn't huge fans of all of them. Norman Wisdom was a perennial. At certain times of year you could guarantee he'd be on one channel or the other, but I never paid too much notice. Last of the Summer Win...

I feel drawn to introduce into any discussion of Star Trek, the Finnish fan film Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, which I haven't seen all the way through yet but have loved as far as I've got. It's also available for free download.

Oh, the connections are huge, frequent and obvious. But Rene Clair stole from Chaplin who then stole back. It's what the public domain is for. My review of this one can be found here: http://dawtrina.blogspot.com/2007/08/nous-la-libert-1931-ren-clair.html I love the way Blogger rips the accented cha...

I'd second (third) that. I'm up to 35 Eddie G films, from Little Caesar in 1931 to Soylent Green in 1973. Some of them aren't particularly good (A Hole in the Head and Two Weeks in Another Town spring to mind), but I haven't seen Eddie G give anything less than a superb performance yet. It truly stu...
