Love Connie Gilchrist, and especially that clip from Presenting Lily Mars. The glamorous young Judy and the old character actress in a moment of sublime, simple elegance. So touching.

I think I've only seen ..Lily Mars... once, and the only scene I really remember is the wistful, charming one between Ms. Gilchrist and Ms. Garland. lovely!

PATRICIA MORISON

I really only know her in her incarnation as a brunette:

...and from one movie "DRESSED TO KILL" ( 1946 ) matching wits with the one and only Sherlock Holmes. No one can hold a gun on you like a brunette or slash you to ribbons with some well-placed bon mots. ( Her blonde counterpart in that series was the unsung Hillary Brooke. ) I think I've read that Ms. Morison was also known for her exceptionally long tresses.

Patricia Morison puts me to mind of another brunette of the period:

Alright...alright. Maybe not. Maybe it's just the haughty bearing. You can see her as a blonde and read a terrific write-up where this unjustly neglected actress is justly highlighted by CarrieLiz. Me? Ha! I can only post pictures. Well whaddya waitin' for? Go here to read up on Patricia Morison.

Patricia Morison and Frieda Inescort were both interesting women and performers--though both were usually better than the roles they were assigned. (Growing up hearing her nail every sophisticated nuance in the Cole Porter score on the original cast recording of "Kiss Me Kate" makes me think Morison was completely robbed when MGM neglected to cast her in the leading lady role in the movie).

One other actor whose career inspires my admiration is Felix Bressart. I just found this clip of Felix and Fanto the Wonder Dog from It All Came True (1940). Enjoy:

Indeed she was. The tresses, in a 1949 publicity still for "...Kate":

Awww, Felix Bressart can break your heart, and right after making you laugh.

I couldn't help but notice that he has nice legs.

Oh Joe, you aren't kidding! Esther Howard was a MARVELOUS actress, one of the best, her blowsy characters can be funny and sad all at the same time. Brilliant.

Joe and Wen-
Esther Howard (1892-1965) once had her day in the Broadway sun, long before her character days, as you can see in this very glam image of her from the early Gershwin show, Tell Me More (1925). Even then she appears to have been a character. When she was appearing in another frothy musical on Broadway in that decade, a New York Times interviewer heard Miss Howard "declare that as a child [in Butte, Montana] she hated school, loathed education and everything even remotely associated with learning, and that as a grown woman she still cherishes a horror of it all." Apparently she loved life in show biz, since she seems to have been active on stage and screen for several more decades.
