Monty Clift, rowr.....

The photo of Marilyn is haunting. I agree with CCF, she rarely took a bad photo. To me, in most, she's lit by some interior incadescent light. Enthralling and vulnerable.

No doubt that both Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift were very photogenic.

I just saw Arlene Dahl (and her son) at San Francisco's Castro Theatre last week (and wrote about it in the Film Noir category)! That's a pretty accurate picture of her. Still lovely after all these years.

Garbomaniac, I also thought the rock images were cool. I thought too that James Stewart looked like Howard Stern.
I have a few more coming up in the near future.

Don't forget Garbo! I suppose you have seen the one for Will and Grace?

Aw Rudyfan, I'm sorry! It was part of the Film Noir festival (that's still going strong) at the Castro. I had hoped to see Bud Cort's appearance at the Harold and Maude screening the week before, but missed that one. Today is Fritz Lang and Anthony Mann day at the movie house. Yippee!

I don't know if I'm buying into the image that she projected on screen, but I always feel a bit sorry for the various hubbies of Gloria Swanson, which I was reminded of after you showed "Mr. Swanson number 4" above. Maybe it stems from a devastatingly incisive Alfred Eisenstadt photo that I have in a book of his picturing Gloria in Switzerland having her ice skates tied on by Henri, the Marquis de La Falaise (Mr. Swanson #3), who was a real French war hero in WWI and WWII, as well as an occasional film director.

Maybe he was simply expressing his devotion to her, maybe he married her for her dough and her influence, I don't know. But, if you've ever seen the photo, it seemed, well, so emasculating and imperious for her to have him do that for her...ah, stardom brought out the best in everyone it touched, didn't it?

Mr. Hawks does not appear to be making eye contact with Ms. Dickinson. I, on the other hand, was immediately drawn to her eyes.

Papa Hemingway isn't making much eye contact either. Is that a picture of Papa on the back of the book she has, or is it...William Faulkner?

Hi Moira,

Some info:
1) Gloria's Marquis had plenty of his own money. His family owned Citroen, the French car company (the Ford Motors of France)....

2) Henri was introduced to Gloria by my grandmother. He was her French translater on the film she made over there....

3) Probably Gloria was a 'diva', most of those silent queens were. But, I'm told that both Gloria and Constance Bennett were devoted & enthralled by their French lover....
I can tell you, he was a very high class gentleman. I knew him quite well, along with his 3rd wife, Emma.... Or is that 4th wife - - I can't keep all these husbands & wives clear and separate now-a-days!!!
Lana, Ava, Artie, Mickey, Gloria & Connie & the Bennetts; not to mention all those Gabors and Arlene Dahl - - - Yikes & Yozus!!!

4) I know Gloria said that Henri was the love of her life, so there you are!!

Marco, your fortunate to be near the Castro Theater. It would make my day to see film noir on the big screen again, especially in a vintage theater.

ChiO, so you were making eye contact with Angie Dickinson eh? Yeah sure.
I'm not certain who is on the back cover of Marlene's book, although I would think it's Hemingway since he is standing there with her.

Uh, to each his own and all that, Mongo, but the word "attractive" isn't the first one that pops into my tattered mind when I saw that photo of Jean Harlow with her mother...more like "scary"--very scary...oh, what fashion victims the female of the species can be!

I wonder if their eyebrows ever grew back? Though, of course, poor Jean probably didn't have time for hers to return to anything like their normal state during her brief life.

Love the Jean Simmons picture, recently watched Angel Face, and remembered how much I love her.

That color Garbo pic is pretty stunning.

Also thanks for the Ginger Rogers' pic, I would love to have seen that deleted scene from Gold Diggers of 1933, my guess is that's her singing "I've Got To Sing A Torch Song", I have an MP3 of it, but it's a shame that a Busby Berkeley number is likely lost.
