That's funny, I was watching this movie one once again, but with the sound off. I was noticing all the little tricks Kazan was using to warp the perspective. I found that same scene fascinating.
I wonder though about Kazan's lack of knowledge in the visual department. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has some of the most stunning shots to my way of thinking. His visuals seem to serve the story of East of Eden well, and don't stand out on their own as much. Maybe he learned to incorporate them more fluidly in his later films?

I see. I guess I need to do more research. I always wondered why most especially A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was so beautiful, but others were not so carefully composed. A few seem to have a "look" but it's very sporadic with Kazan. I should be looking at the DP's more closely I think.
