And yet another somber note. Singer-songwriter Dobie Gray
passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71. R.I.P.

I thought Nancy Ames was just too cute! My favorite Turtles' song is "She'd Rather Be with Me." Love the brass. Big Monkees fan at the time. Never missed the show. It took them forever to release "Valerie" on record. The Boyce and Hart song turned up on the TV show, at least part of it. For two years, I thought, What ever became of that tune?

Like almost everybody, I felt Mike Nesmith's compositions were The Monkees' strongest features. Incongruently country for a rock band, Nesmith's Texas roots and unpredictable style fueled some creative music. But a lot of their stuff was cute. Putting aside the question of who actually played the instruments, The Monkees offered some of the best bubble gum music of the era. Songs such as "I'm A Believer," "Last Train To Clarksville," and the wonderful "Daydream Believer" still get a lot of play. There's a reason for that.
