who are your top five actresses

Post by stuart.uk »

i'll list both international and British versions, but on reflection i'll pick 6

Katharine Hepburn
Bette Davis
Ingrid Bergman
Barbara Stanwyck
Olivia De Havilland
Maureen O'Hara

Brit top six

Audrey Hepburn
Jean Simmons
Greer Garson
Helen Mirren
Vivien Leigh
Angela Lansbury

some might say Angela doesn't qualify as she's spent most of her life in America and i agree she is probably more American than she is British. however, having listening to her speak i know she fondly remembers her British roots, particulary her relationship with her grandfather George Lansbury, one time leader of the Labour Party, who followed in the footsteps of the out going Prime Minister Ramsey Macdonald and i think preceeded post war Prime Minister Clem Attley

Hi Stu, yes I have received your clips but haven't had a chance yet to look at them.

And yes, I tend to prefer actresses that are fun and that I really enjoy watching, regardless of whether they ae considered "serious actresses" or not. Viv is both, though.

ha! Yes, "Honey Bear" was sizzling and on screen anyway, she and Gable had great chemistry. Off screen I suspect they remained just pals because they were very much alike---and Gable seemed drawn to "cooler" women.

Mel

Celia Johnson is in my top ten Brit actresses as are Judi Dench, Ginny McKenna, Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg and Claire Bloom. Phyillis and Margaret were great actresses, sure. a fav of my is the forgotten Rosamund John. you also have 60s stars Julie Christie, Susannah York and Vennessa redgrave, who are still working today. now still going strong, other than Helen Mirrern are Julie Walters and Brenda Bleythyn. i'm sorry if i've missed others out.

Stanwyck was incredible. It's still unbelievable she did not win an Oscar (only a life achievement) when many times she made several films within a year that that could have won her multiple awards.
